Brainfood was co-founded by Mr. Aaron Wong* and Ms. Cat H.-M. Fung in summer of 2018. Sign language, as a visual language, serves as one of the brain foods which stimulates how we navigate our daily lives with eyes and vision. We offer sign language courses and provide sign language interpreting services. Collaborating with different local Deaf artists and professionals, Brainfood also serves as a hub to promote Deaf awareness and sign language as a human right.
*With respect to his personal development, co-founder Mr. Aaron Wong has left Brainfood on Mar 31, 2023.

Advocacy through sign interpreting service is one of our missions to build a better future.

Learning a language and using sign language boost up our brain. Since 1960's, linguists have been pointing out sign languages are natural languages. Recent research of cognitive science and psycholinguistics also showed how sign language influences our brain. Both qualitative and quantitative studies have shown that signers and bimodal bilinguals are more advanced in visual and space as well as motor control.

Due to colonial history and the linguistics background of the deaf school founders, Hong Kong has developed its own local sign language with traceable grammatical features from Shanghai Sign Language and Nanjing Sign Language. Given the early oralistic approach at deaf schools and the close contact with two written languages and three spoken forms, Hong Kong Sign Language (HKSL) is a full-fledged natural language colored by all sorts of linguistic features.
Deaf teachers at Brainfood teach the most common form of HKSL found in our local city. We also discuss the similarities and differences found within different local deaf communities. Picking up this local language, students are able to develop their comprehensive and productive skills gradually.
